For several generations the advice has been to use white, for the reasons given above. However, more and more people are accenting whole walls in a vivid color (violet and mauve and other shades of blue-green, Peace?); the trick would be to guess which color suits which persons. So I would go with white.

Actually, I'm not so sure of that- when I fantasize about a room, I always visualize a pale peach- that shade goes well with white and dark and natural woods - and once I read that peach is the color that best suits all manner of skin tones.
