Somehow it seems pertinent to add this:

When friends and family became aware that my brother had been diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkins, they changed. My brother said that at first he couldn't figure it out, couldn't put his finger on it.

Then it hit him, he said: They were acting as though he were facing something that they never would.

He was a little rueful about it but it made him laugh too.
