There's not much original in Burns' song. Burns' song is mostly modeled closely on the "Unkind Parents (above)/ True Lover's Farewell". His 1st verse, however, is from "The Wanton Wife of Castle-gate", (ZN860), a late 17th century broadside ballad. The broadside itself looks like mostly two songs strung together with a few stray verses tossed in.
