Crippen was, I think, convicted more because of his love affair and the high-speed, transatlantic chase than because of his alleged guilt.

But again, a body WAS found in the basement of his house. It was ASSUMED at the time to be that of his wife. You don't bury bodies in the basement unless they are, somehow, an inconvenience. Whether the body found was the victim of Crippen or his wife (or someone else, for that matter) remains an open question.
