They may not have been sadder but I believe that there were proportionately more. In bygone days more people died as young people and babies and they often suffered and died at home.
    Thus, people were closer and more vulnerable to death (more prima
tive medicine ,when available).                                                   
    People were more aware of the imminence of death and this was reflected in their major form of entertainment-home-made music.
