I split wood with a wedge or "wood grenade" (that round wedge) or a froe improvised from a knife. I will also use an ax head as a wedge, whacking it with a hunk of firewood -- it's a lot safer than swinging an ax or splitting maul over my head and hoping it lands on the wood I want to split.
