O.K., so it wasn't at "the top of my voice." Its more like I said it clearly and directly. And yes, when you're packed into a bus like sardines, other people can hear. After I speak to the rude youngster, someone will invariably say, "I was just about to say something myself" or "I'm glad you spoke up."

I take the same bus every morning. The kids on that bus know that I don't let them get away with being rude. Its amazing how kids respond when you let them know what your expectations are. As long as we allow them to be rude, they will be rude. I have never had any of them challenge me. In fact, they usually apologize.

I don't think they even realize that elderly people are standing. Most of the time they are listening to music or lost in their thoughts. Their heads are in the clouds.

As to the girl in the opening post. Her remark was intentional. I would be very careful about provoking a kid who is obviously trying to impress her friends. You never know how far they will go. I'm just glad you had enough courage to talk back.
