"Toreador Now Guard Thee" certainly does ring a bell. Probably an Edison Bell in fact.

My Mum had an old windup gramophone which came with an assortment of 8", 10" & 12" records. Some were so old that the original recording had been done acoustically i.e. by shouting into a dirty great horn!

Most of the records were dance band stuff by Harry Bidgood, Henry Hall etc "with vocal refrain" but a few were operatic classics which had been rewritten to last no longer than 5 minutes. The Toreador Song was one. Also an aria from the Magic Flute - the label said "Now Your Days of Philandering are Over" (Cherubino Brave and Bold). All these old translations seem to have been full of Thees, Thines and similar doublet ruffling stuff.

My Mum, at the age of 94, still sings snatches from the Mozart aria - and the lyrics set my teeth on edge EVERY TIME!!
