Thread Name: Lyr Req: Andrew Rose (Stan Kelly)
Subject: Lyr Add: ANDREW ROSE (Stan Kelly)
I have the version by Stan Kelly on a Topic EP called The Liverpool Packet. There was Andrew Rose, Maggie May, Lowlands Away and Hullabaloo Belay. Accordion accompaniment was by an young man called Leon Rosselson!
Stan's version was a shorter variant on that already posted:
Andrew Rose, the British sailor
Now to you his woes I'll name
'Twas on a passage from Barbados
All on board of the Martha Jane.
Chorus:
And wasn't that most cruel usage?
Not a friend to interpose,
When they whipped and stripped and mangled,
That British sailor, Andrew Rose.
2. Up aloft the Captain sent him
Naked, and with nothing on,
While the mate did follow after,
Flogging till the blood did run.
3. In a harness cast they put him;
Seven long days they kept him there.
When for mercy he did venture,
None to help him did not dare.
6. So for long they did ill use him,
Till in Liverpool they lie.
The Judge he heard the shameful story;
"Captain Rodgers, you must die."
7. And then his friends and near relations
Cheered him after all his woes.
Don't ever treat a British sailor
Like they did young Andrew Rose.
Lhiats,
Bobby Bob
