Well, clearly Mr Shatner benefited in his early careers from movies that offered a good, serious script and a good, serious director. I figure it's as simple as that. He could act well if the situation merited it. He then got typecast as time went by into roles of a somewhat different sort.

He is now expected to act over-the-top whenever he appears, so he does. He's giving the public what it wants. ;-)
