Subject: RE: BS: Risk Management, Or, How Much Is Too?
I am not decrying it. Far from it. We all manage risk every minute in one way or another, and some of the risks are not at all immediately apparent. For example, outside of my Library is a bronze statue of a young boy, running, books under one arm and a broom in his left hand.

The sculptor's lawyer said that he would have recommended putting the broomstick at a higher angle because as it is it someone could walk into it and injure themself.

We take that risk because it can't be cured (short of defacing the sculpture). But if (when) we add another sculpture we'll do our best to avoid the potential risk we have with this statue.

There is also a sculpture in back. It's made from the metal of melted guns and depicts a youngster, inside a whirlwind spiral of stylized guns, reaching for a white dove and dedicated to an end to violence against youth.

Lovely thing. And it's set on a base about three feet off the ground, which is climbed on by children who could fall and hurt themselves. Again, it's a risk we live with.

My question is, at what point do we say "No, that's too risky"??
