Thread Name: Where have you played recently?(Survey)
Subject: Where have you played recently?(Survey)
On a recent thread on the future of folk clubs, the conversation turned to the many outlets available nowadays for folk music, not all of them part of the folk scene in any sense. The thread diverted after a while, so I though I would generate a little discussion about this in its own thread.
There are many active musicians on this forum, amateur and pro and points in between. I'd just like to ask people to have a litle poke about in their diaries, wallcharts, calendars etc, and come up with a list of places you've played recently. And, for that matter, places you've listened to folk music, if you don't play. I've done the last 25 gigs I've played with the Boat Band; I could have added a few social sessions interleaved with those, but I don't kep a record of those.
The clssification I leave up to you, I made it up as I went along: a folk club in a pub I've called "folk club", for example, but a pub gig payed by the landlord I've called "pub". A dance at a wedding I've put under "private function", but a dance for the public I've called a dance.A dance in a village hall I've called a dance, but a concert in a village hall I've described as a concert. It doesn't matter if the classifications overlap, or don't make total sense. It will give the general idea: what I am looking for is where can folk music be found at the moment.
And a geographical location would help. My 25 were all in the UK.

4 pubs
4 village halls(concerts)
4 Private functions(birthdays/weddings)
3 Community events
3 Folk festivals
2 Other festivals
2 dances
2 Unclassifiable arts events
1 Folk club

The point of the initial discussion, by the by, was the importance and the future of the folk club. I was pointing out that in terms of my own life, folk clubs were a tiny percentage of the folk activites I was aware of. I look forward to hearing about other people's experiences recently.
