I think Bert Lloyd would have given you an argument there Greg. He said something like, in his book, that all these modal scales proved we were a really musical nation. Traditional musicians, playing the Lincolnshire bagpipes and such, thought and expressed themselves along those lines.

In a way you are listening with a modern musicians ears.

Careful though, once you start disagreeing with the traddy viewpoint; it really is just the start. Then you really start asking questions.
