Thing is, I have always thought that like Soul Food, whcih does not usually include sole, that Soul Music had nothing to do with formalized definitions of soul found in metaphyzzickle tracts or religiouns, but was entirely about a combination of bass, rhythm, voice and style that stirs the heart and soul in a particular way. I think of it (rightly or wrongly) as being a cousin to Motown and a granddaughter of Bessie and Blind Lemon, and perhaps the Favorite Neice of Aunt Doowop.
For some reason, I think of things as disparate as Aretha Franklin and "Jeremiah Was a Bull Frog", "Just About Midnight", and "My Girl".
Go figger -- I yam just a white boy lost in the blues.
