I have often played an electric guitar but have never owned one. Why is it that the electric guitar is the only type for some people and others will never play anything other than acoustic?

There are a few electric players that do play acoustic well but are there some acoustic players that bring acoustic skills to bear on the electric instrument?

Richard Thompson seems to have mastered both.
