I thought I would look up the words on Plastic Jesus in Reprints from Sing Out! (vol. 8, p.18) but they didn't help. PJ is "Version by Ernie Marrs. © 1964 by the author" then they start the blurb "No one seem to know the origin of this song ..." It seems Irwin Silber had not heard the earlier form.

Your Dad's song certainly looks like the original ... can we still find more?
