The story that I heard as a child was that the organ was damaged by mice - OK so it's not true, but it's a lovely story.

The reason given is that it was a cold winter, and the mice had been attracted from the fields to the goose grease used to make the leather of the bellows more supple. No organ - so Silent Night was written in desparate haste to perform the same nigh as written.

Now who's going to tell me there's no Santa? Or that the tooth fairy is really your Mum?
