I've played in St. John a number of times and have always enjoyed the city.
Could use a good sandblasting, I've always thought but it's friendly for sure. One of the Baldwins was filming some "Boston" movie the last time I was there. Happens a fair bit due to the architectural similarities.
Boasts a fine mall & crosswalks that will take you a couple of blocks without stepping outside and has a market that would rival the one in downtown Seattle.
Lots of antique shops and some good music shops.
All in all... not a bad choice at all.
