I'm just going to copy the whole thread and aim my research from there on what's available locally and what I can afford.

The new computer has, so it tells me, over 2000MB of RAM and a 320 gig. hard drive. Sound card is RealTek High Definition Audio - it's aimed at the home theatre market, I suspect, and has multiple speaker capacity, etc. - lots of etc. Husband went wild when he decided to replace the ten year old PC to surprise me.

I want to thank everybody who's contributed information - I am getting a good overview of costs and directions to go.
