Actually, I think power in the Senate is better in the USA. You hear a lot more about Senators than you do about members of the House.

The USA has given each state 2 Senators....whereas a state's number of House Representatives are roughly proportional to its population. Thus a populous state like California or New York has much more say in the House than it does in the Senate, but a small state with small population has an equal say in the Senate. It was a way of ensuring both regional AND per capita representation in a relatively fair and equal fashion, and it strikes me as a good idea. I think it's one of the best features of the American system, one which other countries might do well to adopt.

Canada has suffered disunity, for instance, because Quebec and Ontario with their large populations tend to dominate the agenda...that makes the West and the Maritimes angry because it marginalizes them. If we had a parliament with 2 houses as in the USA, and we had an elected Senate with 2 Senators from each province, and every piece of legislation had to pass BOTH houses of parliament.....! Then the West and the Maritimes would no longer be out in the cold when it came to influencing the Canadian agenda.

And that would be one hell of a good thing.

See, the Americans do have some good ideas worthy of adoption. Just not their darned imperial 4-year presidency and their interminable election process.
