Charley and gnu, I don't think the British 'negotiators' much cared where the line came down at that end of the continent.

And neither did most of the people both sides of the border for a lot of the time since (barring the Loyalists and Fenians, I suppose).

I had a winter offroad experience in Maine once (that's a little like a religious experience, but colder). Driver was tired, on our way back from Boston, a few km. from St. Stephen's, after dark, road was good... and then -

Poof. Deep in a snowbank, headlights on spruce trunks (never a good thing to see in your headlights). Snow halfway up the windows, both sides of the smallish car. Had to put the skinniest guy out the back window to dig us out a bit.

"Never mind." I said, once we'd stopped shakin', "It's Maine - there's a guy with a fourwheel drive truck and a winch on the front next house we come to."

And there was. Nice fella, too, just like all us Maritimers. (Tales tongue outta cheek slowly...)
