Once you set a proper screen resolution the only thing that might be distorted on you computer would be a "desktop" picture, or screen saver images, if you select the "stretch to fit" option. The correction is to make the picture(s) so that they agree with the aspect ratio of the monitor. For a desktop, making the actual pixel width and pixel height match the monitor is best, and it's pretty easy to do if you have even a minimalist image editor.
If you open programs/windows in the "midsize" view, they should be undistorted, and can be resized to what you want - you'll just have some "extra space" around the windows. A wide screen is handy if you like to have several windows open at the same time, but is sort of just "wasted space" if you tend to work one window at a time and at "full screen."
