Just as a follow up - good home recordings of course can be made on was is modest systems. Audacity I have found to be good, but if recording acoustic instruments you are likely to get better results with phantom powered condenser mics rather than dynamics like SM58's and 57's. They are good mics just not sensitive enough by and large (though have got good sounds from dobro's using them).
