After hitting the S. Earle site provided by Stewie it comes out. Earle confesses that he fashioned the charactor in the song after Michael Sharra's charactor from the book The Killer Angels. Interesting. In fact Earle calls this "the greatest civil war novel ever written". Well his song is also splendid with it's irish melody and ambience.
