My partner lost his father earlier this year, it was hard. He ws there at the time, with his sister. I was there for him, to hold him and talk to him. We cried together, lots. I was there just to be with him when he wanted and I gave him space when he needed it too. We talked about memories and stories. All you can do is be there.
