Try the Excelsior, across the street from the Museum of Natural History on 81th Street. It's gotten more costly in recent years, but stil less than the mid-town places. And for women, there used to be Leo House on 23rd Street, run by the RC church -- not luxurious but very moderately priced. Or go for the bed and breakfast option -- there are lots in NYC.
