Thread Name: How to pronounce 'plaidie'
Subject: RE: How to pronounce 'plaidie'
Well, Burns rhymes it with "laddie"....

Re. "plaid" (which I would pronounce to rhyme with "lad", too), Byron rhymes it with "glade", in "Lachain Y Gair"/"Dark Lochnagar". But then , he was in his own words only "half a Scot". Re. "Plaidie", in the West of Scotland I think that would indeed have the first syllable as in "ply-wood"; cf the word "pay", which tends to be pronounce as in the first syllable of "piper".
