Just to buttress the input from Bernie, above, I recall the Terry Gilkyson version, which he wrote and for which he is credited, with the Easy Riders, perhaps in 1956 or early 1957. It was said to have been "sanitized" for a family audience but based on somewhat ribald earlier manifestations, as noted. Gilkyson, with and without his Easy Rider partners, did a lot of early television sound track work, perhaps movies too. Correct me if wrong, but did he not also write "Green Leaves of Summer" for the Brothers Four along with other parts of "The Alamo" (John Wayne) soundtrack? The Easy Riders had a good sound.
