When I was doing (American) Civil War Reenactments, the Lieutenant would make the coffee so strong that he didn't have to pour it. You just set your mug down next to the pot and it would climb out the spout and dive into the mug.

BTW, he would sprinkle eggshells into the pot and swing it by the bail to settle the grounds.
