I first heard MJH on that Newport FF album shortly after he started his new career. I was blown away by his gentle nature, his unassuming manner, and the remarkable songs and guitar playing.Like many others, I became determined to learn to play like that! Fortunately, in the 60's Oak put some good books out, and I learned enough songs note-for-note to get the hang of the guitar style.
I still sing many of those songs today - Louis Collins, Spike Driver blues, Blessed be the Name, Creole Belle, Candy Man, Got the Blues (Can't be Satisfied), Stagolee, etc etc. I get as much pleasure playing these songs today as I did 30 years ago.
John Hurt influenced thousands of guitarists and singers all over the world, and his music lives on. Blessed be his name!
