I agree that eric the red misses the point about recorders.

Like every instrument they have their own qualities and are very effective as a consort instrument playing together in parts.

They might be quiet but they are quite capable of making themselves heard. The baroque treble recorder was designed as a solo instrument to be played with an orchestra, albeit a smaller one than is common today, but they will carry over the orchestra, especially in the second octave.

I have known people play descant recorders in sessions - in fact, I've done it myself - and they can be heard just as well as whistles.

I've played a contrabass recorder in sessions before now and other people in the session have assured me they could hear it.
