Have been with AOL since, I think, 1995, but back in the eighties (I think it would be 85 or 86, I was subscribing to the UK "Microlink" service which was horrendously expensive, around 180 GBP per quarter IIRC (or it may have been per annum)

nonetheless , it did enable you to send messages to other subscribers who had similar interests.

primitive, looking back at it now, but exciting at the time ...
