I bought my first computer (a Sun 3) in 1985 because I thought it would be useful in my business. In 1991 I went to a lecture by Mitch Kapor at which there was a stack of cards advertising The World (Software Tool & Die), a very early (perhaps the first ever) ISP. I signed on to it in May 1992. There was no Web in those days, but there were BBSs, IRC, Usenet (including rec.music.folk), & email mailing lists, and I got into them heavily.
