Hey, Bob, that's GREAT!! More than I ever expected to learn about it! I've always wondered about Barnegat, too, and have no idea where or what it is. For some reason I always thought (or perhaps I just WANTED to think, it was a place in Ireland. Perhaps a corruption of someplace like Ballygar, Barnatra or Ballybriggan. But it may only be a word made up to rhyme with Ararat. My father sang in barbarshop quartets and H.S. and College singing groups in the 19teens and early 1920s so that's no doubt where he learned those songs. Bob, thanks so much for your information!!
