The few times it has been a problem, it has been from the way in which it has been used.
I am sure you can think of instances where an otherwise innocent word has been used as an insult in hate speech.

It's not in the usage but the tone. I am sure that Obama's mother uses his full name with love and respect. That asshole radio talk show host, the one McCain pretended to be mad at in Ohio, did not.
