I thought the Jose Ferrar version was pretty definitive. I haven't seen the Depardieu version. Yet. I think I'll put it on my NetFlix list.

P. S. Sorry, but I never could handle Steve Martin. I first saw him in a comedy program that the ABC network (I think it was ABC) put up against NBC's powerhouse, "Laugh-In" The ABC rip-off was just plain pathetic, except for Lily Tomlin. Within a couple of weeks, Laugh-In hired Lily Tomlin away from the ABC show, which was a real coup for both Laugh-In and Lily Tomlin. Shortly thereafter, the ABC comedy (?) show sank without a trace. I don't even remember who else was on the show besides Tomlin and Steve Martin, but every time I've tried to watch Steve Martin then and since, it strikes me that he fails to grasp the difference between "funny" and "silly."

Since I regard Cyrano de Bergerac to be a Sacred Text, I let "Roxanne" pass without notice.
