I'm also read several descriptions of this desperate battle, and find it difficult to conceive how anyone would consider it a launching pad for a joke.

Of course, I'm the one who composed a song about a cow sinking a Japanese fishing trawler, but no one nor any bovine was injured in the process.

And, yes, the German major guns were not 11" but more modest but effective 5.9" guns. Evidently, looking at the underwater wreckage, the Germans took out the forward turrets of the Sydney.
