He would have been a better character actor than leading role but either way he was more a caricature. He used his celebrity, that in itself a caricature, to support the right to arms. I didn't respect him for this in life, and won't in death. In the end he's a tragic figure though. Wonder how long it will be before there's a self-worshipping Hollywood movie about him.
