Well, he was a handsome looking feller with a deep voice. Not a particularly good actor other than acting himself. As Bobert says, he did stand up for civil rights when it wasn't popular to do so.

He was also an exceptionally bad writer, I having tried to plow through one of his nautical novels; this surprised me because Heston was a deep-water sailor and had a wealth of experience to draw on for to base a good story.
