I remember it as my Dad's experience. He was a young man of 25 when I was born (in '48), and he had served as a tank driver in the British forces...from Normandy to VE Day. So as a young boy I was very conscious of the fact that my father had fought in the war, and I was very aware of much of the equipment and history of that conflict. I've remained deeply interested in it every since. WWII ranked very large in the consciousness of kids growing up in the 1950's and 60's.
I think that Richard probably also comes from that time period, and was therefore subject to many of the same influences, and I don't think his first post was made with any bad intentions...or with the intention of dishonoring anyone who died in the war.
To assume so may be to go looking for offense where none has been offered.
