It interests me that the holes in the hulls of HMAS Sydney's lifeboats, attributed to machine guns, were described last night as not being evidence of survivors in them having been shot at by the Kormoran. I know that calibres of even the soldiers' long arms of all forces in WWII had a carrying range of at least a mile but the groupings in one of the photos implies (to me) a closer range. This doesn't seem to accord with published reports of the engagement.
