If you don't put the lid down when you flush, lots of little droplets and so forth get blasted into the air and float around the bathroom for the next person to use it to breathe in.

I don't know why it is some women seem to assume that just because a toilet seat is down it means it's been politely lowered by the bloke. More likely it means he never lifted it up in the first place...
