You see, Amos, knowledge is like a whirlpool or, more precisely, all of the Universe is like a whirlpool -- knowledge is only a small part of the whole. People like you will look at the whirlpool and say, "That's really messy and I can't find anything so let's structure the whirlpool out of existence." Librarians, on the other hand, accept the whirlpool gestalt and embrace the resultant Chaos so that they can obtain what is needed from the whirlpool without imposing an artificial structure upon it. Perhaps you might understand this better if you were to read "Dialogue Above The City" in Martin Buber's Daniel. It's a lot more inexplicable in German, if that helps any.
