Subject: Thought for the day - May 21, 2000
My mother kept every scrap of paper of anything which grabbed her attention. She would save things up and then send them out to her children or friends. After she died, I brought home large brown envelopes marked by her with my name. They were full of things she'd saved from her trips back to visit me in New England or clippings she wanted to share. I've just gone through another of those and found the following. I can tell it was clipped, very neatly, from a "Reader's Digest: Personal Glmpses" page:

Each day I am reborn. Each day I must begin again, cellist Pablo Casals said at 93. For the past 80 years I have started each day in the same manner. It is not a mechanical routine but something essential to my daily life. I go to the piano, and I play two preludes and fugues of Bach. It is a sort of benediction on the house. But it is also a rediscovery of the world of which I have the joy of being a part. It fills me with awareness of the wonder of life, with a feeling of the incredible marvel of being a human being. The music is never the same for me, never. Each day it is something new, fantastic and unbelievable. That is Bach -- like nature, a miracle!

- Pablo Casals, as told to Albert E. Kahn, Joys and Sorrows
