The thing most non-Londoners don't get about the Underground is that the map of the Tube bears no resemblance at all to the actual geography of the streets. What looks like the closest station may actually be further from your destination by foot than one not so obviously near.

As it happens, Patty is correct in that Old St is the closer to Gt Eastern Street, but if the hotel is at the eastern end of the road, then Liverpool Street may be the nearer.

Selby - if you ask three people the way to Aldgate station from Aldgate east station, you'll get five different answers, and I bet none of them will be go out of the station, turn left, cross the road and there you are.
