For anyone in the London area on Friday 25th April (Anzac Day)Weddings Parties Anything are playing possibly their final ever gig!
WPA started life in Melbourne in 1983 and for fifteen years built a solid reputation as one of Australia's best live bands. They officially split in 1998 but were persuaded to reform for the Queenscliff Festival 2006 (DVD available at the gig) and since then have done a few festivals. On March 28 they played in Fremantle where the first gig was sold out (approx 2700 people) and the second also attracted a big crowd to the beautiful grounds of the Fremantle Arts Centre.(NO reviews in local music street press!!) But it was their 'secret' gig on the Sunday that was, for me,the night to remember- 290 passionate WPA fans packed into the courtyard of the Oxford Hotel to experience for possibly the last time the magic that is WPA. Mick Thomas' ability to tell a story and then put it in a song that will bring tears to your eyes (eg For A Short Time)is something that is truly special; they can make you laugh as well. With songs about everything from bushrangers to Brendan Behan, along with a healthy dose of love and hate songs
(a hate song eg Sgt Small). If this post has sparked your curiosity google'em or YT and see what the fuss is about - BUT see them live if you can. Truly one of the most underated bands in Oz history.
Still at the gig in spirit.....
