Here in Juneau Alaska, the sun sets most of the year (it varies by degree) on the'north' snd of the Gastineau Channel (not manmade, so not really a channel). Very often the sunset throws its colors down channel to the 'south' end (in reality, our channel does not run true north and south) where it tints all the mountain tops and sneaks onto the water of the channel through the passes between.

I have seen not only the mountaintops but the ocean colored mauve and pink and orange and yellow. One wouldn't guess that the sunset itself is diametrically opposed.
