The Axle, ah yes. Yeats wrote about it, the Rose Tree, the Axle of the World. That was back when he was involve in the Rosicrucians and and the Order of the Golden Dawn.
I know that because I once had a seminar on Yeats and Eliot:
Turning and turning in the widening gyre,
Shall I dare to eat a peach?
Spread out like a patient etherized upon a table
Who stumbles toward Bethlehem to be born.
Studied 'em both at once. It was lots more interesting that way. If you toss in some Robert Frost it becomes even more interesting:
Whose woods these are I think I know
That is no country for old men
I shall wear white flannel trousers.
