Yes, we do have to work in that atmosphere. We can change it as we work, of course, but it is there and it is a factor.

But so is Mississippi John Hurt's soft voice on my CD player. Which one of them will come along to the spirituals workshop I'll lead in June-- for a mostly-white-guily-middle-class room-- that's a no-brainer.
