Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women", "Little Men", Rose something and other books of the late 1850s has a wise uncle in one of them lecture the little girl about the madness of corsets and other means of support; when she comes forth without one, he praises its healhful naturalness. My guess would be that there was such a movement. (no pun intended)
